About me (and maybe you!)
Some troubles I’ve seen … can you relate?
How would you love to free your heart of these sources of pain?
I can’t afford to lose this job
- Either I need it for the medical insurance or I’m an immigrant who’ll have to go back if I lose it. Or I could be blacklisted.
Work environment is hostile
- E.G., information is on a ‘need to know’ basis. It’s ‘mushroom management’ – I’m kept in the dark and fed bullshit
🤣🤣🤣.
Strict ‘at-will’ work state
- Which means I can be fired at any time without cause. In other words, “If they don’t like me, I’m gone.”
High Performance means Nothing
- If they don’t like me, I’m gone.
Boss keeps us all ‘on the ropes’
- We get ‘lead dates’ that management knows are impossible. Just so we won’t meet them and they can justify giving minimal or no raises.
Pros are a commodity
- I’m a top Pro but paid about the same as everyone else. Just like all the houses in a neighborhood go for about the same price. The only difference extra talent makes is it’s easier to ‘sell.’ I.E., to get another job. Just like a house with extras will sell sooner.
Too much Talent?
- If I show too much, it could make management uncomfortable. First, it might make them fear for their job. Second, they might be afraid I’ll become ‘indispensable.’
Tall Poppy Syndrome
- A boss’ credo is “If ever an employee becomes indispensable, get rid of them!” I myself heard a Director tell me, “We don’t want Supermen here!” He started giving me make-work so I’d quit.
Dare to Argue?
- Arguing is generally a losing proposition. Whoever gets defensive first, loses.
Quality or Speed?
- Per Edward Deming, “Quality is free.” I work in IT so I care about making systems maintainable. I do documentation and build in debugging aids. But management here doesn’t buy it. They want code monkeys that are fast, quality be damned. Versus people who plan and think ahead for the future.
