How do you develop a reputation for being trustworthy?

You’ve doubtless heard that trust can take months or years to create – then with one impulsive act, can be wiped out irreparably in an instant.

Yet most people will begin a relationship “giving the benefit of the doubt.” Perhaps a useful analogy is to compare trust to a bank account. Trustworthiness, then, is measured by the balance in your trust account.

If the balance is high enough, you can make a minor withdrawal without the other person losing faith in you altogether.

However, if your prior balance is near zero, any ‘withdrawal’ risks plunging your relationship into mistrust.
